By FOX NEWS Staff WriterA top member of the Russian mafia has been arrested in the United States for allegedly participating in an online gambling scheme that involved more than 1 million people.
According to the New York Times, Alexei Volkman, who worked for the notorious Mafia Family of Moscow, was arrested in New York City on Tuesday.
Volkman was arrested by federal agents who were working in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, according to the Times.
He is accused of participating in a global poker-style betting scheme that was being used to fund gambling operations in the U.S. and overseas.
Volksman was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and has been a member of Russia’s Mafia family since at least 1989.
His father, who was the head of the Moscow mob, died in prison in 2005.
